Gary Nelson Oliver, age 70, of Woodstock, GA passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023. Gary was born in Angleton, Texas on September 11, 1952, to Jimmie Lou and Harry Nelson Oliver. He spent his formative years in Oxford, NY, where he graduated from Oxford Academy and Central School. Gary followed his love of golf south where he joined the University of Georgia golf team. In his freshman year, he met the love of his life, Nancy. Gary then transferred to Georgia Southern, where he received his bachelor’s degree. While there, Gary was a member of the top-ranked Georgia Southern golf team. After college, Gary started his career as a PGA Club Professional at various golf clubs throughout the state of Georgia. Gary later transitioned into managing retail businesses. Gary enjoyed the last fifteen years of his career working for the Hobby Lobby Corporation.
A true family man, Gary cherished the time spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren, who called him “Pop Pop.” Gary shared his love of golf with his children and grandchildren. In his spare time, he could be found on the golf course with family and friends, or attending any of his granddaughters’ numerous events. He also loved cheering on the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Georgia Bulldogs, and (of course) any PGA golfing event.
Gary was one of the kindest and most loving people God ever created. Being grateful for every day he lived, Gary shared his joy for life with all who were blessed to know him. Gary was truly a gentle-man!
Gary is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Nancy Whatley Oliver; his son Paul Edwards Oliver (Ingrid); and his daughter Heather Oliver Bastow (Jason); his sister Joan McAlerney; his grandchildren Anna, Sarah, and Elise. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Jimmie Lou Oliver.
