One year ago today, you departed this earth for your heavenly home.  OH.....How you are missed!!   You were the BEST Father and Father-In-Love anyone could ask for!!    We yearn for the day that we will see you again face to face.   Until then, we will continue to look after mom and encourage everyone to commit their lives to Christ, just as you would want.  Love you bunches!!!

Dear Hazel , Ellen , and family, 
To say my heart was broken today in learning of Fred‘s passing would be an understatement. I was so very surprised and so very sad. Fred was a true beacon of light . His face lit up with every smile and every story that he  ever told. Just talk to Fred about cars ,or working in the woods ,or making a garden  with Hazel , or spending time with Hazel and the family , and his face  would beam with that sweet smile . After knowing Fred and Hazel and the family for over 30 years , I am so very  sorry for your loss. I will miss seeing Fred when he comes into the office .and miss that twinkle in his eyes . I will pray for sweet Hazel , and  the family , to be comforted by the wonderful family memories that I  KNOW for certain you all share. May God be with you all during this difficult difficult time.

I can't remember a time in my childhood without Fred in it at some capacity. That's how far back my memories with Fred and his family go. We attended the same church, cut, split & sold firewood, worked on cars and vacationed together for years. It seems as tho Fred was always finding a way to fight, wrestle and chase my brother and I when we were kids! Hazel always said "Fred, stop, don't  you hurt those boys"....Fred didn't stop and we loved it! It seemed like  every 4th of July week in Bryson City there was this pre-destined wrestling match between the Maddox's/Garrison's vs. "Turnipseed"! Let me tell you, that was one tough truck driver! Also my introduction to every Jerry Clower cassette ever made came from those camping trips, along with various truck driving music. I'd never seen so many cassettes! 
More important than my childhood memories is the man that you always chose to be. This would be the man that chose to follow God, love Him and love his people. You were always willing to help anyone, anywhere and show them God's love through your willingness to help and serve Him. There are so many memories down through the years with you Brother Fred.....
I will truly miss you Fred. Until we meet again, rest in the arms of Jesus.

I am so thankful to have had Mr. Fred as my neighbor for my entire life. He was such a wonderful man. I loved seeing his smiling face almost every morning that he went out for his walk.  A lot of times my dogs would follow him and he would always make sure they were returned safely. I’m sure he would have loved to know that my newest puppy is named Hazel. One morning I came outside and saw him stomping out a fire in our pine straw that had started from a fire we had the night before.. he didn't want the rest of our woods to catch fire.  He ALWAYS watched out for us and also my grandmother when she lived across from him. I think him and my grandmother secretly competed on who had better landscaping. He was just such a kind man and I truly couldn't ask for a better neighbor. All of us will miss him so much here on our road.

I have had the privilege of having Fred and Hazel as my neighbors for 27 years.  Just knowing they were just across the way has always given me a sense of security and peace.  I feel very blessed to have known Fred, he was always hard at work on something and would always smile and throw up his hand or stop and pet the dogs when he would be out walking.  I loved seeing the antique cars pass by and seeing him and Hazel headed to and from church like clockwork any time they were having service.  He was a great example of a Godly man and he will be greatly missed.    Hazel, Ellen, Hugh and your families, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Also, remember "Love is Kind".
He obviously exhibited much love to his family and friends.  He set a wonderful  example for all to follow.

Dear Hugh & Jane,  Ellen & Devon & your families,
As you process these circumstances of global fear pressing down hard on all of society you may find grief to be heavy and quite a wicked animal to reckon with.  Wrestling with grief though is common and normal after a much loved family member leaves earthly existence.  As each one of you forge ahead remember words of encouragement are strong and can squelch  the weight of grief.  You will see him again and live in the pleasantry of  your spirits  renewed, refreshed,  all burdens lifted.  He was granted longevity of life, raised a fine family, and knew his great grandchildren. Already your hearts must feel  extraordinarily lighter knowing he believed in Jesus and in the Word.   "Let not you heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. " 
His spirit shines on!

Hazel, Hugh, Ellen and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Fred's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I pray you will feel God's presence and His comfort.
Also I hope you feel the love and prayers of all of us who can't be there with you during this time. 
When I think of Fred, I remember his gentle spirit and his smile.
As you treasure all the memories you have, also know that you will have a joyous reunion one day in heaven.

With broken hearts Max & I would love to say how Fred blessed us so. He and Max would take turns teaching  the adult Sunday School class for many years. There was no  better and dedicated teacher as Fred was. He studied and taught with all his heart. He and Hazel have been a great blessing to us and all of  Awtrey Westwood Church.  Fred was always  doing everything that he saw needed to be done.    He was a great example for what a Christians should be.  Well done  our dear and faithful friend.    Love you both so much.

Hazel and family, Fred was the very best brother-in-law a man could be blessed with. I loved Fred, he was like a big brother. He always had a smile on his face and was always willing to help anyone he could. I will miss him so much. He loved working on his old cars and using his tractor to help who ever called for his services. He was one of the strongest man physically I knew. He had a real heavy cutting harrow with two sections front and back on it and he use to lift up and  push one on the other by hand. As  he had gotten older, I called my brother to check on him one time and asked if he was still plowing peoples gardens with the cutting harrow? Mike said yes, but he now used a steel bar to push it over on the front set.  You would have to see it to understand. Not only a physically strong man, he was very strong Christian man, a great husband, a daddy, and a brother-in-law, a friend to all. I loved to hear him pray when we could come down for family gatherings. We loved Fred.


Fred, was a sweet and humble man! I have found memories of church camping trips and  tubbing down the Tennessee river. He will be greatly missed!😢 Sending Love and Prayers to the family.  Love ya Hazel 💔
