Dennis was born in Queens, NY, to George and Helen Eckie in 1946. He was the youngest of four children and was raised in a little red house his father built in a rural suburb of Long Island, NY. When he was 15, Dennis was introduced to his best friend's sister, Catherine. Their friendship became a courtship, and after his service in the US Army and her college graduation, Dennis and Catherine were wed on January 30th, 1971. They were happily married for nearly 54 years at the time of his passing. Their enduring love and unwavering friendship is an inspiration to everyone who knew them - especially their two children, Lauren and Thomas.
Dennis was a jack-of-all-trades. He was an Army veteran, air traffic controller, videographer, stock trader, and for most of his life he was a building products sales manager for Georgia Pacific, BlueLinx, and Home Depot. He was a builder by nature, creative and strong. He renovated and improved every house he ever lived in, from New York to Georgia. Some of his proudest memories were of building stage sets with his wife and friends for Take One Community Theater on Long Island while his children participated in the musical productions. Even in retirement, he was a builder. Some of his last projects were a backyard fire pit, a beautiful garden shed made from reclaimed windows, and a porch swing for his wife.
He also built lasting friendships wherever he went. He was a warm and generous man who shared his time and talents with anyone who asked. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine, his two children, Lauren Gisel and Thomas Eckie, their spouses, Kyle and Nicole, his brother George "Buzz" Eckie, and George’s wife Lilian, along with a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dennis was preceded in death by parents, George and Helen Eckie, his brother, Richard Eckie, and his sister, Carol Cacioppo.
Husband. Father. Brother. Mentor. Friend.
Always in our hearts.
