May 2nd, 1946 - February 7th, 2023
Perhaps not even David Morrison Downing, Jr. himself could have imagined a more peaceful
and loving departure from this world than that which he received on February 7th, at
approximately 2:45pm at the age of 76. Surrounded by those whom he loved most and who
most loved him, songs of worship and praise filled the air as his final, God given breath, was
drawn and returned unto the Lord. Were he able to speak to the moment himself, his response
would certainly have been “I am so blessed!”. One of the many sayings heard often by those in
his presence, and yet he would agree - mere words hardly capable of defining the life of a man
so intensely loved by so many wonderful family and friends.
David is preceded in death by his father David Morrison Downing, Sr. and mother Dorothy
Paulsen Downing and his loving memory is carried on by his caring and compassionate wife of
42 years Brenda Gail Downing, his two sons Matthew and Stuart and their beautiful wives
Kristi(Matthew), and Kimberly(Stuart), along with his eight immeasurably wonderful
grandchildren, Alissa, Lucas, Kaleb (Stuart & Kimberly), Sara, Dawson, Samuel, Haddon, and
Evie (Matthew & Kristi) as well as all four siblings, Glenn, Grace, Gail, and Terry.
Those privileged enough to know David would have undoubtedly been graced by perpetual
positivity and optimism, his contagious smile, and for those especially privileged to know him
well enough, his unmistakable and melodious whistling. As a picture of health and athleticism in
his prime, David’s exceptional work ethic would contribute greatly to his success as a college
football athlete, a feat easily surpassed by his career of 25 years with Delta, through which he
earned great respect within his industry. This respect would carry him through the remainder of
his various career fields until his retirement on April 15th, of 2014.
Significant accomplishments to be sure, his wife and sons would be quick to say that each pale
in comparison to his life's greatest achievement of being an incredibly loving, marvelously
encouraging, and relentlessly committed father and husband. Dimmer is the world without
David’s constant uplifting light and enduring efforts to assure those around him how proud of
them he was. His genuine nature and love for his friends and family left him with no shortage of
people who thoroughly enjoyed being near him and who were left only with the kindest things to
say about him in return.
