Charlie was born on April 8, 1926 to Minnie and Cameron McLeod in the Bronx, New York.
Charlie proudly served his beloved country in World War II in the United States Navy. As a part of the greatest generation, Charlie served in the Pacific theatre and was honorably discharged as Boatswain’s Mate Second Class. Charlie spent time earning rank and then being busted down, thanks to his Scottish temper. He earned an American Theater Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal 1 Star and Victory Medal serving with the 5th Amphibious Fleet.
During one of his leaves home, Charlie met and fell in love with Nora Tierney. He wooed her in his “dress blues”, but alas the Navy life was not for her, and he left it behind to wed Nora on February 15, 1947. Their family grew quickly, and they welcomed Karen, Carolann and then Kevin. The family moved to Valhalla, New York where Charlie built their home when he wasn’t working for the phone company or one of his many side jobs. No stranger to hard work, Charlie built a life for his family with Nora by his side. He worked hard every day. Taking care of his children and his wife was his main priority, but he definitely could relax and enjoy his life. A lifetime member of the Knight of Columbus, Nora and he spent many Saturday nights dressed up at the KoC Hall. The consummate hosts, their home was always open for a meal or a party. As their family continued to grow with the marriages of Karen to Tony and Kevin to Carole, so too came the grandchildren. With the help of his son Kevin and son-in-law Tony, Charlie would eventually build a home in upstate New York (Copake) that his children and grandchildren lovingly call “The Lake”. He retired from New York Telephone after 30+ years of service and Charlie and Nora moved to The Lake fulltime. Charlie whistled through his days working on projects or side jobs as Nora took care of him. His hands were always busy, and he was always whistling a tune. Their golden retriever, Brandy, came into his life and “Bum” was never far from Charlie’s side. The Lake holds special memories for all their children and grandchildren and anyone who was fortunate enough to spend time there.
In 1997, Charlie and Nora had had enough of the cold winters and decided to move south to Georgia. They settled in Kennesaw and enjoyed their time as part of the Legacy Park community. He kept busy with side jobs and taking care of Nora. Charlie was a great storyteller and although the details may change from time to time, he always managed to make you smile with one of his quips or stories. He truly never knew a stranger and loved to flirt with the ladies.
Charlie is predeceased by his parents, Cameron and Minnie, his brother Stanley “Bud” McLeod and his sisters, Norma McDougal and Patricia McLeod. He is also predeceased by their oldest daughter, Karen Provenzano. Charlie lost his beloved and adored wife, Nora, in 2010. His heart was broken, and he was never the same.
Charlie is survived by his daughter, Carolann and son-in-law, Mark Robinson, son Kevin and daughter-in-law Carole McLeod. He leaves behind 6 grandchildren, Kathleen McGraw, Robin Matthews, Christopher Provenzano, James Provenzano, Tara McLeod and Kevin Scott McLeod and 10 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be held at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home on Monday, August 7, 2023, 6pm – 8pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 8th at 11am at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Kennesaw.
