Charles Julius (Chuck) Hutchings of Paulding County Georgia passed away peacefully at home with his family on May 7, 2023. He was born on September 10, 1944 in Rome, Georgia to William and Mabel Hutchings.
Chuck was an only child growing up in Rome, attended Rome City School, and later Bob Jones Academy through the 10th grade. Shortly after his seventeenth birthday in 1961, he enlisted in the US Navy and served his country through 1967. During that time, he was a SONAR technician stationed off the coast of Alaska monitoring the Pacific Ocean and skies during the Cold War.
After completing his time at the Navy, he moved back home to Georgia and was employed by Radio Corporation of America (RCA) for a brief period. In 1970, he was hired by Delta Airlines to work on aircraft simulators. In 1974, he earned his pilot’s license, but never pursued a career in flying. He worked his way up at Delta as a Simulator Engineer, eventually aiding the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ensure simulators worldwide met approval for training Delta pilots. He retired from Delta in December of 2001. Throughout his time working at Delta, Chuck took evening classes at Kennesaw College, now Kennesaw State University, graduating summa cum laude in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.
Chuck’s enjoyed reading, electronics, ham radio, astronomy, movies, baseball games, roller skating, playing chess, watching Jeopardy, watching Braves baseball games, and Delta airline travel with the family. Chuck was handy at tinkering with cars and machines around the house that needed repair. He was a problem solver and self-didactic learner. He was a member of Mensa as well as the International Society for Philosophical Enquiry.
Chuck would say his greatest accomplishments were his children, and valued spending time with his family. Chuck is survived by his four children, Charles Julius Hutchings, Jr, William Edward Hutchings, Anna Marie Harris, Robert Mitchell Hutchings and eleven grandchildren, Hollie Marie Hutchings, Haylea Ann Hutchings, Asa Kyle Hutchings, William Dacoda Hutchings, Jackson Lee Hutchings, Wyatt Julius Hutchings, Tybee James Harris, Rylee Carabelle Harris, Fisher Charles Harris, Finley Savannah Harris, Charles Sebastian Hutchings and two great-grandchildren Malakye James Hutchings and Tyrus Gordon Aldrich. Chuck is also survived by his former wife, Shirley Lynn Hutchings, who was also his best friend and took care of him until his passing.
Chuck’s service will be held at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home on May 10, 2023, at 3 pm with burial to commence after the service. A gathering along with a memory table and slide show will precede the memorial service from 1pm-3pm. There will be a burial at a later date with military honors.
