Edith Charlene Brasfield Newton, age 93, passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2025. She died peacefully in her own home, surrounded by family, a few months after learning that she was living with late-stage pancreatic cancer. She went home to be with the Lord, where her husband, Raymond, has been awaiting her arrival since March 28, 1990, along with their first son who passed away as an infant on February 17, 1952, and Charlene’s brother Douglas who passed on May 5, 2022. She is survived by her sister, Beverly Pruden, of West Jefferson, Alabama, as well as her four children, sixteen grandchildren, and rapidly-growing cohort of great-grandchildren, which welcomed its newest member as recently as March 27, 2025.
Charlene’s long and active life was dedicated to her family and her Lord. She was born in West Jefferson, Alabama, on November 5, 1931, where sixteen years later she met a husband who, throughout his career as a pilot for the United States Navy and United Airlines, would show her the world, living with her in Texas, Washington, Colorado, Kansas, and Hawaii, before settling together near Chicago to raise their family and join the congregation of First Baptist Church of Hammond. Following Raymond’s death, Charlene moved to Kennesaw, Georgia in 1994 and joined the congregation of Shiloh Hills Baptist Church, of which she was a faithful member until her passing.
