Lt. Col. (Ret.) Ashley Ivey passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2012. He was born in Millegeville, Georgia on December 13, 1923, to Charles and Florence Ivey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Asbell Ivey, whom he married on August 31, 1946; a son, Jack William Ivey; and a daughter, Janet Ruth Ivey.
Lt. Col. Ivey enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 30, 1942. He retired from the army on July 31, 1974 and was a veteran of three wars - WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He flew with the 8th AF during WWII and was shot down in German occupied Holland in November 1944. He evaded capture and escaped to Allied territory in March 1945. He maintained life-long friendships with the Dutch people who sheltered him and helped in his escape.
Col. Ivey received an A. A. degree from the Georgia Military College in 1942 and a B. A. from Kennesaw College in 1983. After his retirement from the army, he served as a substitute teacher at North Cobb High School.
A long-time resident of Acworth, Lt. Col. Ivey was an active member of the Acworth United Methodist Church. He was also very active in the Allatoona Charities, the Shriners, the Gideons and the AF Escape and Evasion Society.
Lt Col Ivey was an avid fan of games and crossword puzzles. He and his wife performed as story-tellers for many years.

Visitation will be held on Thursday evening, February 23 from 5:00pm until 7:30pm , at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home Kennesaw, GA. A celebration of Lt. Col. Ivey's life will be held on Friday, February 24 at 11:00 am. at the Acworth United Methodist Church. Burial, with full military honors, will be at the GA National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24.
