Karl Matherne, of New Orleans, LA, peacefully passed away of complications from neuro surgery on Monday, July 9, 2018. He was born in Raceland, LA, on June 22, 1953. Karl moved with his family to New Orleans in 1970 and lived all of his adult life in the French Quarter. He is survived by his father Leroy John Matherne, brother, Mark S. Matherne (Lori), sister Londa M. Connick (Harry), brother Kevin P. Matherne (Olympia), and nephew Kamin G. Matherne. Preceded in death by his mother Barbara Porter Matherne. Also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Karl received his Bachelor of Arts (1979) and Masters of Music (1986) in Voice Performance from the University of New Orleans. He had a varied career working as a Vocal Instructor, Singer/Entertainer and in the Food/Bar Service Industry.
He was a part-time instructor of voice at the University of New Orleans from 1987 until 2005 and at Tulane University from 1997-2000. Karl was currently employed in the Chorus at Christ Church Cathedral and formerly employed as the Music Director for St. Mark’s United Methodist Church; the Chorus at Trinity United Methodist Church of Gentilly; as the Cantor for St. John the Baptist Catholic Church; and as a Choral Soloist at Rayne Memorial United Methodist Church. His professional music career also included numerous performances over the years with the New Orleans Opera Chorus, New Orleans Symphony Chorus, University of New Orleans, and Le Petit Theatre. He was an accomplished Baritone and had numerous leading and choral appearances in opera and musical productions, including a performance of Arias by Verdi sung with soprano Ruth Falcon, Tartuffe, Pirates of Penzance, Faust, La Boheme, Tosca, Die Fledermaus, Viva La Opera, Evangeline, Pretty Baby, The Gift of the Magi, and Pontalba commissioned by the New Orleans Opera to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase, to name a few.
Karl was also currently employed as a Reservationist at Antoine’s Restaurant after having worked as a bartender at the Herme’s Bar for many years. He worked in many restaurants in and around the French Quarter and in the past was known for recurring vocal performances at the Hilton Riverside, Kolb’s Restaurant and Café Giovanni.
Karl had a zest for life and was a wonderful friend who will be greatly missed by all those lives he touched.
A memorial service followed by a repast will be held at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends and loved ones from 1:00 p.m. until time of services.
