Dr. Jay Carrol Pennington passed away on Saturday, May 20th 2017 at Touro Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. Jay was the beloved companion of Charles Stafford Gayle, father of Jordan Jay Pennington and Joretta Melissa Pennington Waites, and loving grandfather to Bryanna Caitlin Waites. Jay was a loving godfather to Shawn Marie Moore and Jay Edward Smith and his three children Matthew Jay, Nicholas Jay and Andre Machado. Jay was a loving brother to George Chris Pennington and Sara Teresa Moore, and loving uncle to Katherine Elizabeth (Beth) Feher and her three children Lindsey Mae, Madeline Elizabeth and Nathan Peter. Jay was also survived by devoted friends Dean and Barbara Smith, devoted friend Rachel C. Moore, and devoted friend and colleague Dr. Jan Kasofsky. Jay graduated from Millsap’s College in Jackson, Mississippi with a Bachelor’s in Science in 1960 and went on to graduate with a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Mississippi in 1963. He completed his internship at the Baroness Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Jay also served honorably for the Strategic Air Command from 1967-1969 as an officer and physician for Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana. Highlights of his professional career include Chief of Staff and founder of Brentwood Hospital in Shreveport, LA from 1974-1979, Clinical Director of Greenwell Springs Hospital in Greenwell Springs, Louisiana from 1983-1996, and Medical Director of Capital Area Human Services in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1997. Jay was known for his dedication to his patients, staff and colleagues. Jay passionately loved the rich culture and history of New Orleans. His home on Washington Avenue in Uptown New Orleans was his prized jewel that he loved filling with antiques and artwork. Jay loved letting “The Good Times Roll” at Harrah’s Casino and was known for saying “I’d like to think I’m doing well.” He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A small service for friends and family will be held in Columbia, Mississippi where Jay requested to be buried next to his father George Jay Pennington and mother Helen Elizabeth Jordan Pennington.
