Irene Kelly Johnson, a nurse during World War II, died Sept. 14 in Leland, N.C. She was 94.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Jamestown, and joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during World War II. She was stationed in the Philippines, where she received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
After the war, Mrs. Johnson earned a certification in physical therapy at Columbia University, and went to work for the New York State Health Department in Hornell.
She met her future husband, dentist Richard Johnson, there and they moved to Kenmore, where she went to work in his dental practice.
Mrs. Johnson was living in the Town of Tonawanda at the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by Mr. Johnson; infant daughter Molly Ann, and grandaughter Katherine Sleap.
Survivors include five daughters, Mary Johnson, Monica Sleap, Margaret Fleming, M. Kelly Jacobius, and Madonna Johnson; two sons, Peter and Patrick; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday in St. John the Baptist Church, 1085 Englewood Ave., Tonawanda.
