It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my incredible father, Robert “Bob” James Hale, who died due to post operative complications at Kelowna General Hospital on June 14th, 2024. Dad was born in Nelson on August 10th, 1948, and raised in Rosemont by his single mother, Maide Hale (nee Palmer), with siblings Gary, Dennis and Wendy.
Dad always seemed to be getting into trouble growing up and often joked he “didn’t get the strap enough” in school. The stories he told mom and I would make us laugh until we cried, and simultaneously wonder how he survived this long. He spent his free time hunting, fishing, trapping, golfing and exploring the beautiful mountains and lakes in the area with friends and family. The stories he told about these times were also hair raising, the makings of an excellent National Geographic documentary, only with more alcohol and cursing (and much less politically correct).
He settled in the Harrop-Procter area and welcomed sons Jason and Gord with ex-wife Lorraine, where he passed these hobbies and interests to them. Many years later, Mom and I came along, and the ‘Mountain Man’ had to learn how to be a ‘Girl Dad’, which he did with surprising patience and grace.
Soon the family grew again when Jason married, and had daughter Dawn-Marie, and Gord married Orejona, with sons Oliver and Floris, Ivan and Alexander coming along soon after. He loved his grandchildren very much.
It has been heartwarming hearing how the community has felt his loss, how he had touched the lives of so many people. The world won’t be the same without him.
I had thirty-two years with my dad, thirty-two years of laughter and adventures.
Thirty-two years with my best friend that I wouldn’t trade for anything.
Goodbye to a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
“See you in the funnies” Dad.
