May 24, 1935 – April 8, 2025
It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Joan Grahl, who left us peacefully on April 8, 2025, at the age of 89. Joan was a cherished mother, Gramma, and friend whose kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering love touched all who knew her. She will be remembered not only for her warmth and compassion but also for a lifetime devoted to caring for others. Joan proudly served her community as a nurse for over 40 years, offering care, comfort, and dignity to those in need. Even after retirement, her heart for service never wavered. She gave countless hours volunteering — preparing meals, knitting hats and mitts for the homeless, assisting with the CNIB bowling league, sending out countless birthday and sympathy cards, reaching out with regular phone calls and visits to shut-ins and others who needed a kind word or a listening ear. Her deep faith was the foundation of her life, and she devoted many hours to her church, always offering a helping hand and a generous spirit wherever it was needed. Joan also found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved tending to her flowers, going for walks, crocheting and knitting with care and creativity, and spending quiet afternoons watching the Game Show Network. These small joys reflected the peaceful rhythm of a life well-lived. Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband, Len, with whom she shared many years of love, partnership, and family. She is survived by her loving children, Mark and Vicki, her devoted son-in-law Trevor, and her cherished grandchildren, Riley, Alliah, and Sara. Her legacy lives on through them — in their compassion, resilience, and the way they care for others. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her life was a true example of grace in action. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that you carry forward Joan’s legacy of kindness — volunteer, give, call someone who needs to hear your voice, or simply show up with love.
A memorial service to celebrate Joan’s life will be held on Friday, April 25th at 2:00 p.m. at Central Okanagan United Church, 721 Bernard Avenue, Kelowna BC. All who knew and loved Joan are welcome to attend. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be livestreamed.
