It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Kurt Sorensen. A devoted husband, proud Father, loving sibling and much revered friend & neighbour. Kurt was born in Vejle Denmark on October 31st 1939. He often told tales of a mischievous and joyful childhood in his beloved home country. His family all emigrated to Canada in 1957 and made Calgary their home. Kurt predeceased by his parents and siblings Elsa and Anna but he will be missed dearly by his siblings Birgit, Erling and Morgan with whom he spoke almost daily.
On New Year's Eve 1958 he met the love of his life Bonnie. She and Kurt were married November 13th 1959 and had two boys, Martin and Ken. Kurt was predeceased by Bonnie last year and Martin in 2008. The family lived together in Calgary for many years and Kurt was well known in that city as a prolific and talented painter. After moving to 'retire' in Kelowna, 2008 Kurt continued to paint and was never happier than when he was loading up the van in his overalls. Well into his late 70's he would be up high on a ladder painting delicate edges without any tape. For him, painting was a true calling. Several years ago he laid down his paint brushes for good in order to be home full-time for Bonnie as she was unable to care for herself due to illness. Kurt learned to cook and clean and spent all of his days for many years lovingly caring for his sweetheart. He did so with such cheerfulness and devotion it will live on for all who witnessed his caring as an enduring and endearing display of true love. Bonnie passed away the day after their 61st wedding anniversary last year.
Kurt had a passion for cars but he loved his Calgary Flames more. An avid sports fan and a die hard Calgary supporter to the end, He took great pleasure in The Flames recent good form. He was also a much loved neighbour and friend, Kurt's door was always open and there was always a beer in his fridge and a seat at the table. Just two days before he passed away friends and family were all over at his house to celebrate his 82nd birthday. Kurt danced and smiled and had a great time. He was dearly loved by his family, friends and neighbours and known by all as a kind and caring man.
In lieu of flowers please donate to the S.P.C.A as both Bonnie and Kurt loved animals and Kurt even painted their facility free of charge once. A joint memorial service shall be held for Bonnie and Kurt at a future date where Ken and the family look forward to hearing family, friends and neighbours share stories of this much loved hard working couple. It gives us all comfort to think that Bonnie and Kurt can be together in spirit and, if you look up at a rainbow from now on you may see they look a little brighter as there is a new painter in heaven! R.I.P Kurt you will live on in all our memories.
