In Loving memory of Joan Alice Heffernan. Joan passed away peacefully on February 22, 2018 a few months before her 102nd birthday. Born June 18,1916 in Winnipeg Man. the youngest of 5 children to Ernest and Edith Lownds. After graduation she headed west to St Joseph’s Hospital’s School of Nursing in Victoria B.C.
Upon becoming an RN and seeking adventure she was headed to the Yukon but ended up in Smithers B.C. It was there she met George (who affectionally called her “Lou”) a 47-year-old confirmed bachelor. They married in April 1945 and had three children Alex, Patricia and Eric while living at beautiful Lake Kathlyn. Though Joan retired from nursing when she got married, when duty called she would help in the operating room. Other times Dad would chain up his truck and they would head off to a trapper’s cabin to delivery a baby or other medical aid.
Looking for a warmer climate they moved to Kelowna in 1966. Joan was an accomplished swimmer receiving a “Life Time Pool Pass” from Mayor John Hindle but preferred the ‘Sharpness” of a cool lake swim. On her 100th Birthday her special request was to have a swim in the lake, which she did a few weeks later, followed by a glass of sherry. Mom also had a green thumb, roses and other plants flourished under her dedicated efforts. Flowers often appearing in one of her watercolors or needle point.
Grandma Ball took a strong interest in her grandsons Shaun and David, teaching them how to play crib and attending their school, sporting and theatre events.
Joan leaves behind her beloved son Eric (Kathleen) her grandsons Shaun (Meghan) and David. She was predeceased by her son Alex, her daughter Patricia and husband George. Always a kind, loving and thoughtful Mother and Grandmother. Thanks for the memories Grandma Ball. We love you.
Leading by example Joan is leaving donations to the Salvation Army and Kelowna Food Bank. Interment to follow in the family plot at Smithers BC.
