We’re heartbroken to announce the unexpected passing of a great man, my best friend and husband Gordon (“Gord”) Hunting. Gord passed due to complications arising from a lung cancer diagnosis in August. He spent his final 4 days at Hospice House. We are extremely grateful for the loving care and attention he received there.
Gord is survived by his wife Brenda; step-son Tyler Martens, wife Marie and son Hal, his namesake; and step-son Trevor Martens, wife Cyndel and daughters Nora and Ella, all of Kelowna. In Ontario and Quebec, son Gary and daughter Liane Hunting, grandchildren Jennifer Hunting, Kathleen Hunting, James Hunting, Josh Hunting, Jakob Hunting, Jordyn Hunting and Lexis Hunting and great-grandchildren Gabriel, Carter, Aliya, Elizabeth and Tyler. Predeceased by parents Billie and Mel Backman and Gord Sr. and Ruth Hunting, as well as daughter Maureen Hunting and his late wife Lori Whyte.
Born in Montreal, Gord was a hard worker all his life, starting as a young teen in Montreal. In 1969 he moved to Vancouver and ran a gas station and then moved to Kelowna in 1974. He worked at various businesses and got into long haul trucking with his own rig for many years.
After living in Whitehorse for a year with wife Lori, he decided to return to Kelowna, gave up truck driving and started a new business, Apple Valley Promotions, with Lori in 1982. Lori tragically passed away in a car accident in 1994. In the spring of 1995, Gord and Brenda connected after being friends for many years as members of the Rutland Kinsmen and Kinettes. They married in 1999, and celebrated their 25 year anniversary on September 18th, 2024.
Brenda joined Gord at Apple Valley in the fall of 1995 and they successfully worked together until they sold the company in January, 2019. Not one to retire completely though, Gord kept working part-time with Apple Valley until the summer of this year.
Gord was an active volunteer with the Fat Cat Children’s Festival as Concession Director in the late 1990’s and early 2,000’s. He was a Life Member of the Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs of Canada, loved volunteering for the Salvation Army Kettle Campaign each winter and was just always there for his friends and family.
He also loved to golf though he would be the first to tell you he was never good at it. He did give his golfing buddies some great competition though over the years. He even managed a hole in one at Michaelbrook in July of 2004 and he had only been golfing just over a year!!
He will be terribly missed by us all and everyone who knew him, but most especially by Tyler and Trevor as he couldn’t have been a better Dad to them both. He was an exceptional Grandpa too, although a little nervous around newborns sometimes.
Rest in peace, my love. It was an extremely difficult summer for you, but your battles are now over. Thank you for our 29 wonderful years together.
Gord’s Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, Nov. 10th, 2 pm at Revelry (1383 Ellis St. across from the library) Kelowna. After the service, appetizers and drinks will be available if you’d like to stay to socialize and share your stories of Gord.
