Fred was born in the Netherlands. He was an only child and immigrated to Canada with his family when he was 6. After 3 years in Pioneer, BC, they settled in Vancouver BC where he graduated from BCIT as an electronics technician in 1974.
The next several years he worked for the RCMP communication department in Nelson, BC, then transferred to Dauphin, MB where he met Alice. After a time his love of the mountains drew them back to BC.
Fred, Alice and Tara lived in many places in BC including Prince George and Christina Lake. A rash move to Kelowna in early 1980s found him working with Omega Communications, where he stayed until his retirement in 2015.
Throughout the course of his career Fred had many adventures from climbing tall cell towers to precarious helicopter rides to very remote locations.
After he retired Fred enjoyed more peaceful pursuits including music, photography, hiking, chess and playing pool and badminton at the Rutland Senior Complex. He had a wicked serve and he kept his opponents on their toes with his slam shots.
Fred was calm, practical and patient…juxtaposed by a great sense of humour. Being the highly intelligent person he was, living with the curse of Alzheimer’s in his last years took its toll but he’s free now.
Celebration of life to be with family. In lieu of flowers please donate to the cause of your choice.
Rest in peace, Fred.
