Her proud parents were Harry Horner (Shawville, Que) and May Horner (Gardner, North Dakota). Fern grew up just outside of Blaine Lake on a farm where her father raised Clydesdale horses. When she finished high school, Fern attended Business College in Saskatoon. When World War 11 broke out, Fern was hired to work for the war effort in Washington DC. At the end of the war Fern returned to Saskatoon where she met Earl Van Slyck. After a whirlwind romance Fern and Earl were married. They raised their three children in Saskatoon. On their retirement Fern and Earl moved to Kelowna. They enjoyed RVing and spent many winters in Yuma Arizona. Fern had a keen intelligence and loved international travel and adventure. She loved picnics and swimming at Bear Creek park, although she was afraid of heights she often hiked the Myra Canyon Trestlels with her family. What Fern really enjoyed was a good game of Bridge and a glass of wine with friends and family. Fern was an elegant beautiful woman who embraced all that life had to offer.
Fern is predeceased by her beloved husband, Earl Van Slyck and her sister Maime Hogan. She is survived by her son Rod Van Slyck and his wife Joanne, her daughters, Sybil Van Slyck and Audrey Van Slyck. Fern will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Andrea Cuistar, Kristy Van Slyck and Judd Van Slyck and her dear great grandchildren Lucas Van Slyck, Quinton Cuistar, Freddie Van Slyck and Charlie Van SlycFern will be missed by not only her family, but also by her good friends at Sandalwood Retirement Resort.
