Don was born November 21, 1939, in Penticton, BC and is survived by his children Bonnie, Arnold, Clifford, Douglas and ten wonderful grandchildren; Brittany & Braden, Justin & Sarah, Kyle, Kendrick & Kimberly, Kayla, Naomi & Emily. Don was also a great grandpa to six wonderful little treasures; Dayton, Spencer & Haily, Dominic & Breanna, and Jaxon.
Don believed the sky held no limits and obtained his pilot’s licence when most people were getting their driver’s licence. In 1962, Don married the love of his life Shirley Marlene Ettel who predeceased him on February 23rd, 2018. Don’s adventurous spirit ignited his passion to explore Canada’s Arctic between 1971 and 2002. Don’s adventures included living in Oliver BC, Rainbow Lake AB, Sanikiluaq, Cambridge Bay, Fort Smith and Yellowknife NWT. Don and Shirley later retired to the sunny Okanagan and enjoyed the many visits from the children and grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at Kelowna General Hospital and Community Services that did their utmost to care for Don. Don wasn’t allowed to smoke his pipe towards the end, but the support team more than made up for it as they would greet Don with a smile that always perked him up and from time to time slip him some ice cream. Don was blessed to be surrounded by wonderfully caring friends and neighbours Mike, Mel, and Lynn.
A Celebration of Life will be held later this year when COVID restrictions have been lifted.
