Don was born November 24, 1935 in Dalhousie, New Brunswick. He completed his schooling in Montreal. Don was a proud veteran who served his country in what was then known as the Royal Canadian Air Force. Upon discharge Don attended Acadia University in Halifax, completing a bachelor degree in economics. After graduation, he moved to Vancouver in 1961 and met Jean (nee Carrier, b1934). They were married in November 1962 and until Jean’s death in 2007. As newlyweds, they moved to La Tuque, Quebec where Don was employed as a production planner with Canadian International Paper. Son Donald Leslie (b1963) arrived while the family was there.
The family moved to Kelowna in March of 1971, at which time Don joined Hiram Walker as a production planner. He was with Hiram Walker in Winfield from its inception and until it closed its doors in the 1990s. Remarkably, after retirement from his career at Hiram Walker, Don attended Okanagan University College and completed a second bachelor degree in education in 1995. He loved Kelowna, and March 9 would have marked the 52nd anniversary of the family’s arrival here which he referred to as his ‘Shangri-la.’ Daughter Kathryn Jean (b1971) was born shortly after the family arrived in Kelowna.
Don is survived by his children, Wayne Ian (Sherrey) of Ottawa, Donald Leslie (Donnie) of Kelowna, and Kathryn Jean (Kathy) also of Kelowna. Don is further survived by his one and only grandchild, Grayson James Donald of Kelowna, sister-in-law Ferne of Dalhousie, New Brunswick as well as nephews, Hugh and Jeffrey and their respective families in Eastern Canada.
Don was predeceased by his parents, Mother, Alice Kathryn, and Father, Leslie Stewart, his beautiful wife Jean, older brother Stewart, as well as his good friend of many years, Ernst Grahn.
The family wishes to recognize and thank Don’s medical team and, in particular, his GP- Dr. Michael Hopman (Mountain Valley Medical); nurse practitioner (Urgent Care Centre) Kim Orwaard-Wong and the oncologist, Dr. David Kim, BC Cancer Centre.
At the request of the family, a private graveside service is planned for Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at 1:30PM at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery.
