Cecil is survived by Theresa, his wife of nearly 60 years, his son Kevin (Ruth), grandchildren Kayden, Jaron and Liam, his son Brian (Susan), grandchildren Martin, Samson and Jaclyn, his son Alan (Christine), and his sisters Celeste and Elizabeth. Cecil is predeceased by infant daughter Susan, son Damon and sisters Sr. Colette OSU, Helen, and Bernadette.
Cecil was born during the Great Depression on a dairy farm outside Humboldt, Saskatchewan on March 26, 1930. Upon the completion of high school, he attended the Saskatoon Normal School (a.k.a. teachers' college) where he earned his teacher's certificate, while working as a teacher in one-room school houses. He then earned a B.Ed. and B.A in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Saskatchewan in 1954, and an M.A in 1956. After this, he attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana where he received a Ph.D in Mathematical Statistics in 1960.
Upon completion of his Ph.D, Cecil worked as a professor in Saskatoon at the University of Saskatchewan from 1960 - 1965. From there, he moved to Regina where he was Chairman of the Department of Mathematics between 1965 and 1970. He moved to Nelson B.C. in 1971 where he served as president of Notre Dame University. In 1976 he moved to Kelowna where he worked as a professor of statistics at the Okanagan College until he retired in 1992. Throughout Cecil’s career, he was involved in various mathematical and post-secondary educational societies, and has authored articles in various professional and academic journals.
Cecil was devoted to his Catholic faith and lived his life honourably in service of the Lord. He was involved as a Trustee of several Catholic school boards, held volunteer executive positions with the Boy Scouts, Minor Hockey, and the Kelowna Right to Life Society where he was an active member for many years.
A Requiem (funeral) Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 839 Sutherland Ave., Kelowna, B.C. Interment at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery, followed by a reception at First Memorial Funeral Services, 1211 Sutherland Ave., Kelowna, B.C.
In keeping with Cecil’s passionate desire to advance the pro-life cause, he would be pleased if those with intentions of demonstrating sympathy with flowers, would redirect their generosity toward the Kelowna Right to Life Society (3089-3151 Lakeshore Rd., Kelowna, B.C., V1W 3S9, www.lifecollective.io/kelowna). Please note flowers are not permitted in the church during the Lenten season.
