It is with great sadness that we announce that Bernard Robert Salmon passed away peacefully on October 18, 2023, at the age of 95. Bernie was recently predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Jean Salmon. We know he missed her terribly and it gives us comfort that they are now reunited and will be resting together. Bernie was born on June 16, 1928, in Markham, Ontario, to his parent's Robert and Winnifred Salmon. Bernie was the second oldest of 10 children. When he was a young man, his father died of cancer and Bernie worked hard to help support his mother and siblings. Bernie married Jean on May 30, 1953.
The couple moved to Montreal, Quebec, where their 2 daughters were born. He worked for Canadian Tire for many years prior to moving to Kelowna in 1971. Bernie owned the Dairy Queen franchise in Rutland and after selling that began a career at Napa Auto Parts where he worked until he retired. He was a very hardworking and committed man who enjoyed, and took pride in his work. After their retirement, Bernie and Jean enjoyed several cruises and trips over several years. Throughout his life, Bernie had a love of watching sports on TV, exploring as well as collecting coins and stamps. Other than his family, his greatest passion was gardening and he was often working outside in the yard. There was always a luscious lawn, beautiful flowers and a large vegetable garden wherever he lived.
Bernie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, who he would do anything for and loved spending time as a family. Bernie will be lovingly remembered and cherished for his strong, steadfast and loving spirit.
Bernie was preceded in death by his wife Jean, his father Robert, his mother Winnifred, sister Marion, and brothers, Victor, James and Don. He is survived by his daughters Joanne Pros(Wally) and Donna Purll. His beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren and his siblings Lillian Morton, Marie(Paul) Booker, Gordon Salmon, Carolyn Simpson and Betty Jean(Fred) MacLean. Special thanks to Dr. Daniel Obedkoff and the staff at Glenmore Lodge for their wonderful care.
A family celebration of life and inurnment of both him and Jean will be held on May 30, 2024 on what would be their 71st wedding anniversary.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of First Memorial In Kelowna.
