When Alexandra Paulina Nyuli walked into the room, those in her company felt energy, an enthusiastic spontaneity. This was just one example of who Alley was and how she impacted those around her. Alexandra was a clever and gregarious person who always sought out the finest attributes in other people. It was as if Alley wanted to share all of their experiences, revel in their lives and celebrate their discoveries. Alexandra was tireless and had boundless enthusiasm that would serve her well throughout her life.
Alexandra was born on July 10, 1993 at Kelowna General Hospital in Kelowna, BC. She was the daughter of Curtis and Paula Nyuli. Alexandra was raised in Kelowna, BC. Always at the ready with a good joke, she grew up to be quite a humorous person. While some who knew Alexandra might describe her as an idealist, her friends and family understood well that Alexandra was always in pursuit of life’s endless possibilities and opportunities available to her.
Alexandra was raised with one sibling, her older sister and best friend, Katey. She was known to most people as Alley and was very accepting and supportive of her family. She was perceived as the central person in her family in terms of keeping communication open between the family members. Whenever discord or tension arose within the home, Alexandra was typically the member who brought about resolution and harmony. These traits served Alley well in her adult life and, along with her wit, outgoing personality and understanding of others, drew the admiration of many who knew her.
As a young girl, Alexandra was able to empathize and identify with a vast array of people and personality types. This quality drew her into a diverse group of friends and acquaintances. Alley was intelligent and had little trouble getting along with her peers. She was almost always the first to jump in when it came to playing games or participating in other childhood activities. Alexandra took part in and was an avid hockey player, ending her hockey career in Midget AAA. She played recreational fastball as well as middle school basketball. She was a member of Kelowna Minor Hockey; she participated in Hungarian dance group when she was younger and played recreational baseball. In her spare time she liked experimenting with make-up, hair and nails; she loved to draw and was quite artistic - showing her creative side with a flare for fashion. Alexandra's memorable achievements included Athlete of the Year in grade 7, 3 AAA Provincial hockey championships:, two Pee Wee and one Bantam as well as numerous elite hockey tournaments Alley earned the trust and respect of her team mates and was selected as captain of her hockey team, Midget AAA in 2011 wearing #15. Alley had the ability to find amusement with almost any activity she and the many childhood friends she shared might discover.
During her high school years, Alexandra responded enthusiastically to any new project and was regularly in search of one adventure after another. She graduated from Rutland Senior Secondary in 2011. Alexandra was a very good student, and generally did well in her courses. Alexandra absorbed as much as she could from all of her teachers and was consistently able to tackle conceptual and abstract problems, using her imagination to master her assignments. For Alexandra, school often became just an extension of playtime, thanks to her ability to turn just about anything into a game. Classmates considered Alexandra a good listener, knowing that when necessary, they could go to her to discuss just about anything. Her favorite classes in high school were dance and an Emergency Medical Responder course. The teacher she enjoyed learning from the most was Mr. Aaron Volk.
Alexandra did well in college, as a result of her comfort level with tackling new theories and her love of learning. She earned her certification as a Health Care Assistant in 2012 from Okanagan College. Alexandra was very adaptable, a quality that helped her make the transition from high school to college with little difficulty. Alexandra was always in quest of new things to learn and experience.
With a talent for making acquaintances easily which in turn brought her an endless stream of friends, Alexandra was very sociable and could blend without effort into any social group. Assertive and outgoing, Alexandra was easy to know and demonstrated a deep concern for others. She always seemed aware of what was going on with people around her and throughout her life she made many, many friends. Her best friend was her older sister Katey and she shared many laughs, good times and long lasting memories with Alicia & Kyle Bryan. She remained close to her dear friend Ramsay Jaswal. She had numerous other friends throughout her short life, far too many to mention.
Alexandra was uplifted by new ideas and was excited by life’s possibilities, traits that made her an exceptional worker. Her primary occupation was care aid. She was employed for 2 years with Interior Health. Alley was enterprising, inventive and caring which enabled her to perform her duties in a passionate, professional manner.
Because Alexandra loved to have a broad variety of activities in her life, she took advantage of the opportunity to pursue numerous hobbies. She had a gift for make-up art, nails and hair; Alley loved to create new outfits out of thrift store finds with her mom. She had a knack for being able to multi-task in order to create time for all of her favorite pastimes. However, Alexandra's ever-present concern for others always took precedent.
Alley believed in the Christian faith. She led the family prayers many times before dinner and could empathize with others. She was able to use these qualities in other areas of her life as well.
Alexandra's love of improvising in her daily life was a perfect fit for her enjoyment of traveling. Excited about seeing changing scenery and constantly looking for the enjoyment life could offer, Alexandra took her vacations seriously, well, as seriously as she possibly could. Favorite vacations included a family trip to Disneyland, hockey tournaments in San Jose, California and Ottawa, Ontario.
Alley was a lover of animals and cherished her pets. Bailey, a blood hound dog and Nemo, her ginger cat, were her buddies for a number of years. She had several horses, many chickens, blood hound dogs and numerous other cats over the years.
Our sweet, little Alley lost her life in a tragic car accident and passed away on January 28, 2015 while traveling in the area of Joe Rich on Hwy 33, Kelowna, BC. She is survived by her mom and dad, Paula and Curtis and her beloved sister Katey. Also left to mourn her loss are her grandparents: Nanny Donna Mann, Grandpa Alex and Grandma Ev Nyuli, Grandma Loleta and Grandpa Dave Gallis. She had many aunts, uncles, cousins and special people in her life who will continue to carry her in their hearts including: Kim & Uwe Helm (Michelle & Justin Maurage), Shannon & Willy Helm (Stephanie & Shawn Kuzio & Jordan Helm), Joanne Starchuk (Megan & Cole,)Andy Starchuk, Calvin & Shelley Nyuli (Lindsay & Ryan), Carmen Nyuli (Courtney & Jeff Leason, Colin & Chris Nyuli,),Penny Nyuli, Teena & Murray Wright (Ryan Wright, Richelle & Chris Anderson, Rilene & Jason Johnson, Ryley & Amanda Wright ), Tami & Keith Bozman (Mark & Miriam Bozman, Justin & Kysha), Tanis & Immanuel Greeves (Jeremy, Joshua & Jaylene), Michelle & Darren and family, Diana Bryan (Alicia & Kyle). There was always a certain style and inventiveness to Alexandra. She was a dynamic, self-expressive person who was forever looking to celebrate the endless possibilities life had to offer. She had a knack for being clever, creative and witty, and for others, was a joy to be around. While she was often fiercely independent, it seemed as if many others looked to Alexandra Nyuli for inspiration, leadership, wisdom and even courage. Alley was always more than willing to share life’s experiences with her loved ones.
She was loved by many and will be profoundly missed by all who came to know her. Bubba, we'll "love you forever for now and for always as long as we're living our baby you'll be..."
