Richard (Rick, Dr. Rick, or Dr. Gee) was born on February 9, 1951, in Garden City, Kansas, the second of three children born to Nelson and Jo (Robinson) Magie. He was the mischievous, trouble-making brother of two loving and patient sisters, Esther and Jacque. After graduating from Hutchinson High School in 1969 and Hutchinson Junior College in 1971, Rick attended the University of Kansas, School of Pharmacy, graduating in 1975.
While attending KU, Rick met his future wife, Sue Ann Schlosser, who was attending Kansas State University. The two met when one of Rick’s best friends, Dennis Brown, was dating Sue’s roommate, Leah Mann. Together, Dennis, Leah, and Sue set out to find Rick his “ideal” girl, which he described as a short gal, with long hair, a cheerleader-type. Needless to say, Rick was wrong about his perfect girl, and soon realized that the tall, intelligent, short haired brunette, Sue Ann, was the only woman for him. They were married on August 10, 1974 at the First United Presbyterian Church of Kansas City, KS.
After KU, Rick attended the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating in 1980, and completed his pediatric residency in Kansas City in 1983. During this time, Rick and Sue gave birth to their three children, Adam, Sarah and Leah.
Following the completion of Rick’s pediatric residency, the Magie clan moved to Carson City, Michigan where he had a private practice. The family lived there for four years prior to making the journey south to settle in Bedford, Texas. This began an 18-year career of pediatric medicine in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, during which Rick served as the Chairman of Pediatrics at Harris Methodist HEB Hospital. The Magie family was active in their church, Saint Timothy Cumberland Presbyterian Church where Rick and Sue both served as deacons and elders.
While accompanying a missionary team to Mexico, Rick discovered his passion of spreading the love of Christ and building homes for those less fortunate. This passion led to many more trips to Mexico where Rick not only built homes, but also provided much needed medical care to those struggling with health issues in Mexico. His dedication and enormous heart soon inspired many others to join him on these missions, and earned him the Humanitarian Award in 2004 from Harris Methodist HEB Hospital.
In 2006, Rick and Sue moved back to Kansas City when Rick was called to teach pediatric medicine at his alma mater, then known as Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCUMB). He continued leading medical missions with his students to Mexico and Guatemala. The University named Rick the Faculty Member of the Year in 2012 and he was recognized as one of Kansas City’s ‘Heroes in Health Care’ by Ingram’s, Kansas City’s Business Magazine. Rick also served as Chairman of Pediatrics and the Medical Director of the KCUMB Physician Associates. While in Kansas City, Rick and Sue were active members at the Crossroads Christian Church in Shawnee, where Rick was highly involved with the Men’s Fellowship.
In 2014, Rick and Sue were called to move back to Fort Worth to be with their grandchildren: Esperanza, AJ, Cruz, and Micah. Rick began teaching at the University of North Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and continued his mission work to Guatemala and eventually, to Panama.
In 2009, while on a mission trip, a fellow physician noticed that a lymph node in Rick’s neck appeared enlarged. Following that trip, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which began his battle with cancer. Luckily, Rick was a fighter. His bravery and passion for life granted the world more time with this amazing human being. He fought hard and was declared “in remission” twice prior to developing Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), which required a bone marrow transplant in September of this year. On Thanksgiving Day of 2019, encircled by the love of his family, Rick was at last healed by his heavenly Father.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Jo Magie. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sue Ann Schlosser Magie, son, Adam Richard Magie (Brandy Bunch) of Temple, TX, daughters, Sarah Ann Reyes of Fort Worth, TX, and Leah Ruth Magie of Lawrence, KS, 4 grandchildren, AJ and Micah Magie, and Esperanza and Cruz Reyes, sisters, Esther (Roger) Gormley and Jacque (Brent) Cully, and his ever faithful dog, Rosie.
