It is with profound sadness and much love that we announce the passing of John George Mulholland II, of Justin Texas, at the age of 75, on June 9, 2023, with family and friends at his side.
John was born July 17, 1947, in Rockford, IL. As a military family, the Mulholland’s moved around, both in and out of the country. He was a Boy Scout, and was awarded the Order of the Arrow. John graduated high school in Bangor, Maine, and soon after joined the Navy. Later in life, while being the consummate overachiever, working as a counselor, nurse, professor and professional student, he met and married the love of his life, Valorie Mulholland. They celebrated their weddings on December 26, 1989 and February 23, 1990. John was a loving and devoted stepfather to their children, as well as an amazing grandfather and great grandfather. He was an avid reader, loved watching documentaries and just a font of knowledge. John TRULY enjoyed doing whatever, whenever, and wherever to make Val happy. Together they enjoyed traveling, fishing, gambling, and seizing life’s pleasures.
John is preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Valorie Mulholland, father John Mulholland, mother Charlotte Palmer, and brother Harold Mulholland.
John is survived by his sister Cheryl Karkheck of Ft. Worth, sister-in-law Judy Mulholland of Ft. Worth, Anita and Tommy Steward of Justin, TX, Cheree and Keith Harrell-Steward of Sherman, TX, and James and Geranda Steward of Wichita Falls, TX. He is also survived by his remarkable nieces and nephews, 12 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.
John enlisted in the Navy on June 29, 1965; after boot camp and Hospital Corpsman school, his first duty station was Chelsea Naval Hospital; in 1967 received orders to the 3rd Marine Div., where he completed advanced field medical training and became FMF qualified. In May of 1967, he was assigned to Lima Co. 3rd Batt. 3rd Marine Div. and in August transferred to A Company 1st Amtracs. John received an honorable and medical discharge on January 27, 1970 HM2 (E-5).
John was awarded many medals and commendations including two Purple Hearts, Combat Action Ribbon, Unit Citation, Good Conduct, National Defense, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon with two stars, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Vietnam Service Ribbon with date bar, and the Congressional Veteran Commendation.
From 1970 to 1991 John attained an AD in Nursing, a Bachelors of Social Work, and a Masters of Counseling with a subspecialty in Mental Health from Midwestern State University. In addition, he attained his license as a Chemical Dependency Counselor. John worked for the Veterans Administration setting up long term aftercare programs for veterans and retired as a team leader in Sioux Falls Vet Center located in South Dakota.
John was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Marine Corp League.
