Born on a farm outside of Prescott, Arkansas on October 11th, 1925, Catherine Louise Butcher Grice was raised in Gould, Arkansas, where her father was the sheriff and her mom was the church organist.
Catherine was a star basketball player in high school. During World War II, she worked for a ship builder in Orange, Texas. She met her husband, Arthur (“Bill”) Grice, in Enid, Oklahoma and eloped shortly after in 1947. While in Enid, they had their first child, John Charles (“Chuck”) Grice, then moved to Gainesville, Texas where they had their second child, Arthur Barry (“Bubba”) Grice.
Bill worked in sales within the oil industry in Houston, Texas, and Catherine was integrally involved in entertaining his customers. After Bill advanced professionally to a management role within the industry, they moved to New Orleans, where they both developed a love for celebrating Mardi Gras and listening to jazz. Bill died in 1982 at only 57 years old, then Catherine moved to San Antonio, Texas, where she attended Trinity Baptist Church and Fellowship Church.
She lived near her grandchildren, Cynthia Nichole, Justin Christopher, and Jonathan Kyle Grice, who lovingly called her “Memaw.” For decades, she loved to play golf, frequently took trips with her friends, and painted with oils and watercolors.
She is survived by her son, Chuck, her daughter-in-law, Betty Ann Grice, her grandchildren and their spouses, David Rush, Laura Conway Grice, and Kayce Hutchison Grice, and her many great grandchildren, Elijah Hayden Rush, Isabel Gracelyn Rush, Lydia Joy Rush, Zoe Abigail Grice, Riley Catherine Grice, Tristan Christopher Grice, Harrison Conway Grice, and Alethea Jensen Grice.
The family would like to express appreciation to the many attentive staff at Truewood by Merrill in Keller, Silverado Memory Care in Southlake, and Pathway Hospice that lovingly cared for her in her later years.
