The son of Elizabeth and George Holbrook of Keene, he was predeceased by his brother, Pete Holbrook; his sisters, Susan Taylor and Sarah Carroll; as well as his son, Christopher.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen Jones; his sons, Jay and Todd Holbrook; his stepson, Sam Jones; and eight grandchildren: MacLean, Todd, Catherine, Camden, Jack and Grace Holbrook, and Henry and Everett Jones; as well as his sisters: Cynthia Sivonen of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; Carol Brown of Jupiter, Fla.; and Martha LaFleur of Greenland (N.H.)
Tom attended Mount Herman School and graduated from the University of New Hampshire. He then embarked on a career in the grocery industry, working for many years with Star Market in Massachusetts and finally at Blueberry Fields in Keene. He and his wife, Ellen, were fixtures in Keene, frequenting Dunkin’ Donuts, Timoleon’s and Swamp Bat games.
Tom was also an avid poker player and travelled throughout the Northeast for tournaments, eventually achieving his goal of playing in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. He had a competitive spirit but also a strong sense of fair play. Affectionately known as “Mr. T,” Tom was received with both great fondness, but also a healthy level of respect for his prowess at “the table.” He was an astute reader of his competition and often seemed to know his opponent’s cards better than they did. He relished success but accepted loss with grace and humility. With his ever-present fedora in place, “Mr. T” was the ultimate competitor but also a valued friend indeed.
No formal church services will be held, but an informal visitation to remember Tom and celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. at DiLuzio Foley and Fletcher Funeral Homes, 49 Court St. in Keene.
