He was born in Brattleboro, VT, on February 2, 1929, to Friendly M. and Florence E. (Stockwell) Garland. He attended Dummerston, VT area schools until he started working on his brothers’ farm.
He developed a skill and talent for carpentry and later struck out on his own as a carpenter. Here is where he made his name. Much of his work can be found in the Village of Spofford.
He married Leola D. Boyd on July 20, 1947, in a ceremony in Ferrisburg, VT.
He had a love of woodworking; enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a Committeeman with the Chesterfield Boy Scouts, Troop #286.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 66 years: Leola D. Garland of Spofford; two sons: Sherry Garland and his girlfriend Patricia Whitcomb of Marlborough and Raymond Garland and his wife Sheila of Englewood, Fl.; 2 daughters: Mona Walsh of Marlborough and Carol Blaisdell and her husband Peter of Keene; a sister: Marion Starkey of Unionville, CT; seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre deceased by seven brothers and two sisters.
A Memorial Service, celebrating the life of Mr. Garland will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 11:00 at the Fletcher Funeral Home. Burial will be held at a later date.
