He was born in Boston, MA, June 19, 1946, the son of Prentice F. and Phyllis (Coleman) Smith. He grew up in Endicott, NY and received a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from Clarkson College and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Rochester Institute of Technology.
He was a First Lieutenant, serving in the United States Army’s 44th Engineer Battalion in Korea during the Vietnam Era.
A resident of upstate New York and Atlanta, Georgia for many years, Mr. Smith worked for 40 years for various engineering companies, retiring in 2008. Following retirement, he and his wife, Gwen, moved to Spofford where they have resided for the past five years.
Mr. Smith was a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for foster children in New Hampshire, and a volunteer and board member with Habitat for Humanity. He was an active member of St. Catherine’s Episcopal Church in Marietta, Georgia, serving as a MUST Ministries Volunteer and Junior Warden. A member of the United Church of Christ in Keene, Mr. Smith served on various church committees, was a member of the church choir, and also a Stephen’s Minister.
He enjoyed traveling, photography, hiking and kayaking. He also enjoyed genealogy. He will be remembered most for his sense of humor, compassion and love for his family
He is survived by his wife, Gwen A. (Davies) Smith, having celebrated their 45th anniversary on July 13th; two daughters, Valerie L. Smith of Lilburn, GA, Victoria L. Moore and her husband, Seth, of Keene, NH; two grandchildren, Aaron Moore and Ann Moore both of Keene; two brothers, William P. Smith of Ft. Pierce, FL, Jeffrey D. Cartwright-Smith and his wife, Mary, of East Liverpool, OH; brother-in-law, Robert Davies and his partner, Susan Wright of Galway Lake, NY; three nieces and two nephews.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 4:00 PM in the United Church of Christ, 23 Central Square, Keene. Burial will be on Wednesday at 11:00 AM in the Mt. Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mt. Auburn Street, Cambridge, MA. Family and friends are invited to call on Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene.
