He was born in Newton, Mass., August 19, 1953, the son of Philip J. and Mary L (Conroy) Cargill.
Paul grew up in Melrose, Mass. He and his family spent their summers in Jefferson, NH, where he was a caddy at the former Waumbek Golf Club. While in high school, Paul participated on the school’s track team where he excelled in hurdles. His talents in running the hurdles earned him a #2 ranking in New England. Following graduation from the Don Bosco Technical High School in Boston, he returned to Jefferson to reside on a full time basis.
Paul was a graphic artist, working first with Stinehour Press in Lunenburg, VT, and most recently with Springfield Printing in Springfield, Vermont.
He truly enjoyed the outdoors. He enjoyed the mountains and hiking, completing all of the mountain ranges in New Hampshire and was close to completing the Long Trail from Massachusetts to Canada, which he began after he was diagnosed with cancer. He also enjoyed kayaking on the Pemi River and locally. He loved the beach and would take h is family to Maine every summer. Paul would also travel annually to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.
He was known for his great sense of humor. He enjoyed attending his children’s sporting events and also coaching his son’s baseball team and daughter’s soccer team. He was also a volunteer at the Keene Community Kitchen.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Elaine (Nelson) Cargill of Spofford, three daughters, Alecia M. Cargill and her fiancé, Shannon Kulakowski, of Epping, NH, Christine M. Cargill and her fiancé, William Callahan, of Keene, NH, Colleen M. Cargill of Burlington, VT, a son, Timothy Paul Cargill of Spofford, his mother, Mary L. Cargill of Melrose, MA, three brothers, Peter F. Cargill and his wife, Mary, of Melrose, MA, Philip Cargill and his wife, Karyl, of Plymouth, MA, Jerry X. Cargill of Melrose, four sisters, Mary Estabrooks of Guildhall, VT, Ann Grossheim of Stoneham, MA, Regina Wells and her husband, Graham, of Dracut, MA, Elizabeth Iriana and her husband, Nate, of North Reading, MA, his godmother and aunt, Joan Conroy of Melrose, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 11:00 AM in St. Bernard Church, 185 Main Street, Keene, NH. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Main Street, Keene. Family and friends are invited to call on Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made in Paul’s memory to the Keene Community Kitchen, PO Box 1315, Keene, NH 03431, or to the Cohos Trail Association, 252 Westmorland Rd., Spofford NH 03462 .
