He was born December 14, 1943, in Gardiner, ME, the son of William and Hazel (Hart) Carney. He was a 1962 graduate of Cony High School in Augusta, ME. Later in life he went on to earn a bachelors degree in Sociology from Keene State College. Before his retirement he was employed at Southern Community Services for many years where he worked with the homeless community.
He was a compassionate person who was devoted to the work that he did for the homeless and those who struggled with addictions. For more than thirty years he had remained sober which had allowed him to be a devoted father and "Pa".
He is survived by his daughter Kelley Carney and her partner Guy Calkins of Swanzey, NH, his son Patrick P. Carney of Keene, NH, three grandchildren, Michael and Michelle Norton-Carney and Abigail Carney of Swanzey, NH, his sister Kathleen Horne and her husband Laurence of Augusta, ME, two brothers William Carney and his wife Carlene of Winslow, ME and Arnold Carney and his wife Carrie of Santa Rosa, CA and several nieces, nephews and extended family members. He is also survived by his dear friend and the mother of his children Cynthia Forest Carney of Winchendon, MA. He was predeceased by his mother, father and sister Allegra Sterling.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2015 from 11 am to 1 pm, at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene, NH. Burial will be at a later date in Manchester, ME at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to 100 Nights Shelter, 17 Lamson St., Keene, NH.
