She was born in Lebanon, NH, on June 13, 1951, the second daughter of Bernard D and Alberta (Thibodeau) Whitney, Sr. She was a 1970 graduate of Keene High School and a 172 graduate of the Thompson School of Nursing in Brattleboro. That path led her to a lengthy career in both nursing and the teaching of nursing. She worked for many area public and private nursing home facilities, most recently she was a Licensed Practical Nurse for Health Care & Rehabilitation Services ( HCRS ) of Vermont, in Springfield, VT. She had also previously worked for the City of Keene as a Parking Control Officer.
She married Lawrence V. Switzer, Jr. in October of 2004. She was previously married to Douglas C. Plankey, for 23 years, until his death in 2001.
She had been very active in local Scouting, with both her boys. She was also involved in the Local Rebekah’s
She enjoyed the warmth and sunny days of spring, summer and fall; any day that allowed her to go out riding on her motorcycle was a good day. Mostly she loved her family. Her husband, children and grandchildren were all very special to her.
She is survived by her husband of 10 years: Lawrence V. Switzer, Jr. of Walpole; her children: Jon Plankey of Keene; Aaron Plankey and his fiancée, Ashley Haygood of Keene and Kara Greene and her husband Chris of Springfield, VT.; eight grandchildren: Dustin Plankey, Christopher Plankey, Thomas Plankey, Ella Plankey, Connor Silver, Whitney Greene, Catrina Greene and Cooper Greene; her brother: Bernard D. Whitney, Jr and his wife Dianne of Keene; a sister: Bette Jean Whitney of Keene as well as many nieces nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband: Douglas C. Plankey.
Calling Hours will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2015 from 4:00 until 7:00 at the Fletcher Funeral Home. A Graveside memorial service will be held at a later date in the summer, in the Monadnock View Cemetery in Keene.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made, in Mary Lou Plankey-Switzer’s name, to an area youth organization of your choosing.
