She was born in Keene, NH on August 7, 1929, the daughter of Oscar and Alice (Halpin) Lamothe. Margaret attended local schools and was a 1948 graduate of Keene High School.
As a young woman, Margaret was very interested in politics, and was elected to serve in the NH House of Representatives from 1963-1965. At the time, she was the youngest female representative.
In more recent years, Margaret enjoyed her membership in the St. Anne Sodality. She would work tirelessly knitting mittens and scarves all year in anticipation of their annual Christmas bizarre. She was a woman of great faith and a prayerful communicant of St. Bernard Parish in Keene.
As an avid Red Sox fan, she watched and enjoyed as many games as she could. She always enjoyed cooking for company, often serving her favorite dish, cranberry chicken. Margaret was a loving person. She was kind and considerate to all, typically finding a way to pay everyone she encountered a compliment, and was always concerned for their welfare.
She will greatly missed by many, especially her daughter, Reinette Russell Reilly and her husband, Brian; three granddaughters, Jessica Shaw, Amy Shaw and Sarah Shaw; five great-grandchildren; her sister, Ardis Abraham; her brother, The Rev. Monsignor Daniel O. Lamothe; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Legere in 2008; a brother, David Lamothe; and a sister, Marlene Lamothe Bentley.
A memorial mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Msgr. Daniel Lamothe on Tuesday, November 27th at 11:00AM in St. Bernard Church, 185 Main Street, Keene. Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery, Keene. There are no public calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, donations may be made in Mrs. Legere’s memory to the Community Kitchen, PO Box 564, Keene, NH 03431-0564.
