She was born in Keene, NH, April 17, 1924, the daughter of Paul M. and Lillian F. (Keyes) Barrett.
A lifelong resident of Keene, she was a 1942 graduate of Keene High School, and attended the Dresser Business School.
She married Maurice Davis Towne on November 18, 1944 in North Hampton, Mass. with Rev. Robbins Ralph officiating.
Mrs. Towne worked in the office of the former Princess Shoe Company in Keene and later for 45 years with the former New England Acceptance in Keene, serving as treasurer.
She was a longtime member of the Court Street Congregational Church, the United Church of Christ in Keene, and the Gilsum Congregational Church. Mrs. Towne was a member of the Keene High School Class of 1942 reunion committee and attended every reunion including the class’ last reunion, their 70th. She was a volunteer at the Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, for many years.
She was an excellent seamstress, loved watching TV, and enjoyed eating ice cream. She was also an avid reader. She especially enjoyed her responsibilities as a homemaker. For many years, she participated in daily walks at the Keene Parks and Recreation Center, and also enjoyed her weekly luncheons with her special friends.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Maurice D. Towne, of Keene, a brother, Maurice Barrett and his wife, Ruth, of Keene, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a great-great-niece.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the Gilsum Congregational Church, 13 Main Street, Gilsum, NH. Rev. James Berry, Pastor, will officiate. Family and friends are welcome. Burial in the West Cemetery, Bradford Road, Keene, will be held in the spring. Family and friends are also invited to call on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Towne’s memory to the Gilsum Congregational Church, PO Box 86, Gilsum, NH 03448-0086.
