Lillian E. O’Neil of Westmoreland, NH and a former longtime resident of Keene, NH, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday, died Tuesday, April 09, 2013 at the Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland.
She was born in Greenfield, MA, April 8, 1913, the daughter of James F. and Eva M. (LaBaron) Mooney. She grew up in Greenfield graduating in 1931 from Greenfield High School.
A resident of Keene since 1933, Mrs. O’Neil worked at the former Faulkner and Colony Mill during World War II. She later owned and operated her own business for many years, O’Neil’s Home Decorating, making custom draperies for many in the area.
She was an artist, enjoying painting of landscapes and portraits, studying art at the Sharon Arts Center in Peterborough, NH. She was a parishioner of St. Bernard Church in Keene, and a member of the Professional Women’s Business Association.
She is survived by two sons, Arthur E. “Chip” O’Neil and his wife, Marge, of Keene, Timothy J. O’Neil and his wife, Nancy, of Wilbraham, MA; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey O’Neil, Kevin O’Neil, Karen Haley, Kelley Fitzgerald, Mike O’Neil, Colleen Milos, Tyler O’Neil, Emma O’Neil, Molly O’Neil; several great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, June O’Neil of Salem, NH; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Arthur E. O'Neil, Sr., former Keene Police Officer, on October 29, 1981, a son, Michael J. O’Neil, in August, 2012, two brothers, James F. Mooney, Jr. and Myron Mooney, and two sisters, Mary Burt and Ruth Brady.
Graveside services and burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Keene, will be private.
The family wishes to extend their grateful appreciation to the staff of Maplewood Nursing Home and Dr. Gary Shapiro for their wonderful care provided to Mrs. O’Neil during her stay their.
