He was born November 8, 1929 in Groveton, NH the son of Rev. Herbert Almon and Mildred Irene (Pitcher) Cooper; raised by his stepmother, Bertha. He was a 1948 graduate of Keene High School. On August 23, 1953, he married the love of his life, Irene Lee-Prouty.
For more than 57 years Joe worked for RS Roberts as a Technician and repairman. He was a very hardworking man who was devoted to providing for his family. He was also a member of the Chesterfield Fire Department for more than 17 years. He was a leader of the Cub Scout Troop #286 and was a member of the Chesterfield Lion’s Club.
Joe was also very devoted to his faith and was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Chesterfield, NH, where his father was Pastor. As a member of the congregation he was also a part of the choir and was a soloist for special occasions. In his limited free time he enjoyed crafting lattice hook rugs, watching and recording movies, spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and sitting on the porch with his pipe in hand.
He is survived by his wife: Irene Cooper of Chesterfield, NH, three daughters: Virginia Herrick and her husband John of Chesterfield, Marie Cooper of Newmarket, NH and Rebecca LaBounty and her husband Edward of Swanzey, NH, two sons: Richard Cooper and his wife Penny of Chesterfield and Joseph Cooper and his life-partner, Diana MacLeod of Chesterfield, six grandchildren: Johnathan Herrick, Jennifer Herrick, Jason Cooper, Candice Cooper, Travis LaBounty and Ashley LaBounty, four step-grandchildren: Michele Chickering-Hall, Matthew Chickering, Jessica Miner and Heather Cotnoir, eleven great-grandchildren, his sister, Laurice Jackson of Maine, his brother, Nathan R. Cooper of Massachusetts, his two sisters-in-law, Beverly Cooper of Virginia and Lori Cooper of Maine, and several nieces, nephews and extended family members. He is predeceased by his two younger brothers, Charles and Roger Cooper.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 532 Route 63, Chesterfield, NH, on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at 1:00pm. Burial will be held in Spring 2015 in the Friedsam Cemetery and will be announced at a later time. Family and friends are invited to call on the family Friday, January 2, 2015 from 4 to 7pm at the Chesterfield Town Hall, Route 63 Chesterfield, NH.
