His parents, Mary Claire (Walker) and John Marshall McMahon, Sr., welcomed their son into the world on November 15, 1934 in New Rochelle, New York. John grew up in Westchester County, NY. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Iona College in 1959 in New Rochelle, NY. He served in the United States Navy Reserves from November of 1961 till September of 1968, during the Vietnam War. His career spanned from owning his own gas station with Standard Oil, to salesman with Esso Oil to being honored as the number one salesman in the world at the Waldorf Astoria, NYC with Ingersoll Rand.
He resided in New Rochelle, NY, Mount Vernon, NY, Ossining, NY, Bethlehem, PA, Montville, NJ, Hudson, OH, Stuart, FL, Danville, CA, Annandale, NJ and Keene, NH.
John was an avid sailor starting from the time he could walk. He and his sister, Barbara were a phenomenal team and won numerous sailing trophies and awards over many years. The most prestigious honor they achieved was while they were in grammar school. John and Barbara were Fleet Champions in the Comet Class Division for Long Island Sound and qualified to compete in the Internationals held in Ohio, in 1946. John was a longtime member of the Larchmont Yacht Club in Larchmont, NY and was granted an honorary lifelong membership at North East Yacht Club in Euclid, OH where he served as Treasurer for several years. In 2000, John was certified in the United States Coast Guard as a U. S. Merchant Marine Officer.
He is survived by his three daughters, Cheryl A. Williams of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Maureen C. McMahon, of Keene, NH, Elaine C. McMahon, of North Canton, OH; his grandchildren, Colleen Kauth, Carolyn Kauth, Katelyn Kauth, John Williams, Ashley Williams, Alexandra Krutyholowa, Tyler Patz and Elianna Price; a sister, Barbara McMahon of Columbia, MD; and his nieces and nephews, William Costello, Brian McMahon and Kathleen Ridlon. John was predeceased by his wife, of forty-one years, Carol M. (Rencsko) McMahon in 2001; his daughter, Laura Jean Kauth in 1997; and a niece, Maureen Farrell, 2015 .
Services and burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Hudson, OH, will be held privately by the family on August 7th 2021.
