He was born in Peterborough, NH on October 31, 1931 the son of Howard L. and Jennie E. (Johnson) Main.
He grew up in Harrisville, NH and attended the Harrisville Town School He was a 1949 graduate of Keene High School where he played football and was an All-State baseball player. After attending the University of New Hampshire for two years, he joined the Air Force during the Korean War. After completing his military service with the rank of Staff Sergeant, he resumed his studies and graduated with a BS Degree in Education from Keene Teachers College in 1959. He later earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Vermont.
He was an educator in the Keene School System from 1959 through his retirement in 1990, primarily as a Mathematics teacher at Keene High School.
Coach Main was the varsity baseball coach at Keene High School from 1967-1989, amassing over 300 wins and leading the Blackbirds to three state championships. He is a member of the Keene State College Athletic Hall of Fame and the Union Leader Hall of Champions. He was honored to call Alumni Field his “home” for many years.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and took great pride in the personal and professional accomplishments of his former players and students.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Catherine (Nielsen) Main of Keene; two sons; William H. Main and his wife Karen of Thornton, NH and Daniel V. Main and his wife Marcia of Portsmouth, NH; two daughters; Elizabeth “Lisa” Wright and her husband Paul of Westmoreland, NH and Molly Lister and her husband Harry of Rowley, MA; seven grandchildren Eric LaRoche and his wife Stormy, Emily Martineau and her husband Jeremy, Matthew Main, Christian Main, Derek Wright and his wife Erin, Julie Walters and her husband Enoch and Douglas Wright and his wife Sabrina; five great-grandchildren; Destiny, Jackson, Jaiden, Rylie and Seth; a sister, Evelyn Driscoll of Keene, NH and a brother, Edward Main and his wife Arlene of Swanzey, NH; an aunt Esther Hakala of Keene and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his special friends Greg and Jeannette Gardener and Steve and Kathy Olson. He was predeceased by his brother Eugene C. Main.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Bernard’s Church, 185 Main Street, Keene, NH on Saturday morning, November 15, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the Monadnock View Cemetery, 650 Park Avenue, Keene. Family and friends are invited to call at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene, on Friday, November 14, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
