Flora May Calef Hammond 89, a longtime resident of Keene passed away after a period of declining health on Monday, April 18, 2016 at the Villa Crest Nursing Home in Manchester, NH with her loving family by her side.
She was born in Keene, NH on March 18, 1927 the daughter of Richard Thayer and Jennie May (Foster) Calef.
Flora attended the former Tilden School, Central Junior High School and graduated from Keene High School in 1945. She graduated from the former Keene Teachers College (now Keene State College) in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in Education.
Mrs. Hammond was an elementary school teacher and taught the first grade in the Hanover, NH Elementary School and the McKay Elementary School in Beverly, MA. Mrs. Hammond was also a teacher and director of the United Church of Christ Parent Cooperative Nursery School for seventeen years. She was also an assistant teacher in the three-year-old room at the Keene Day Care Center for one year. She also taught Sunday School at the Keene Unitarian Church for thirteen years.
She enjoyed walking, biking, flower gardening weekly swim aerobics. She was a member of the Keene Senior Citizens Center, the Historical Society of Cheshire County, the Red Hat Society, and was a member and the local chapter leader of the AARP.
She married Richard C. Hammond in 1954 and moved into the ranch house they built in Keene. Richard died in 1997.
She is survived by her four daughters; Kathleen Leonard and her husband Wayne of Wendell, MA, Janine Poff of Rindge, NH, Sharlene May Labore and her husband Victor of Manchester, NH and Darlene Ann Frappiea and her husband Joe of Manchester, NH; her brother, Richard Calef and his wife, Ann of West Chester, PA; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held in the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene on Saturday afternoon, April 23rd at 4:00 p.m. The Rev. Richard Wallace will officiate. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the services. Burial at the Woodland Cemetery in Keene will be private.
In loving memory of Flora's fondness for cats, the family suggest that memorial contributions be made in her name to the Monadnock Humane Society, 101 West Swanzey Road, Swanzey, NH 03446 or to the American Red Cross, 6West Chapter, 83 Court Street, Keene, NH 03431.
