She was born in Pittsfield, MA, May 31, 1937, daughter of Donald E. and Rhoda (Kennan) Hayn. When she was 8 years old, her mother passed away and her father remarried Nancy (Goodyear) when she was 10.
Mrs. Parkman grew up in Pittsfield and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1955. She went on to graduate from Hartford (CT) Hospital School of Nursing in 1958.
On September 27, 1958, she married William Frederick Parkman in Pittsfield. They had a loving marriage of 39 years before his passing in 1997.
Mrs. Parkman and her family moved to Swanzey in 1968. She enjoyed her nursing career working at a variety of medical facilities. Most notably, she worked as a school nurse for the Monadnock Regional School District in the towns of Fitzwilliam, Gilsum, Sullivan, Surry, and Troy before retiring after 28 years in 2005.
She was an active parishioner at St. James Episcopal Church serving as a Lay Eucharistic Minister for 30 years, vestry for 4 terms, clerk of the parish for 2 terms, and assisted on committees where needed. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling Europe. Mostly, her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.
Her family remembers her as compassionate, independent, strong, and always placing her family’s needs before her own. Anyone who had the chance to meet her knew how loving and caring she was just by seeing her warm smile.
Mrs. Parkman is survived by her children William E. Parkman of Swanzey, Karen N. Ruffen, and husband Thomas, of Salem and Thomas A. Parkman, and wife Lisa, of Brimfield, MA; grandchildren Samantha Parkman, Michaela Carol Parkman, William J. Parkman and Trevor Ruffen; brothers Rev. Donald W. Hayn, and wife Margaret, of Whitehall, PA and Russell J. Hayn of Charlotte, NC; sister Gretchen Hayn of Norfolk, CT; and several nieces and nephews.
Services for Mrs. Parkman will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014, time 11AM, at St. James Episcopal Church, 44 West Street, Keene, NH 03431. Fletcher Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 33 Marlboro St., Keene, NH is handling the arrangements. (www.fletcherfuneralhome.com)
