She was born in Boston, MA., on November 30, 1917, to Andrew F. and Alice E. (Sloley) Hines, Sr. She grew up in Charlestown, MA and was a 1935 graduate of Charlestown High School.
While working at Gobelin Chocolate Co. in Cambridge, MA., she met Augustus Leo Rose, whom she married on November 28, 1940. They celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary before his death in 1980.
After their marriage, they moved to Greenfield, MA., and started to raise their family. After a few years they moved again, in 1950, to Keene where the last of their children was born and she resumed her working career with the Giant Store here in Keene, and later with Schleicher & Schuell. She was a fixture at her son’s store, J&J Discount, in Spofford, where everyone, family to customers, referred to her as “Nana”.
Mrs. Rose loved the mountains as well as the ocean, but her family came first and foremost to anything. Sunday dinners at her home were always open to any and all family, and reflected back on simpler times when everyone sat down and ate together, sharing their news and life’s events.
She was a member of Ladies of St. Anne Sodality and a communicant of St. Bernard’s Church. Her devotion to her faith was ever present. She also belonged to the Keene Senior Center, was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Loyal Order of Moose # 478 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Daley Whipple VFW Post #799.
She is survived by three sons: Augustus. Leo “Lee” Rose, Jr. and his wife Shirley of Edgewater, FL., David A. Rose, Sr. and his wife Cynthia of Swanzey Ctr., and Kevin M. Rose and his wife Debra of Spofford; three grandchildren: Jill Rose of Swanzey, Linda Rose of Troy and David A. Rose, Jr. and his wife Amy of Keene; three great grandchildren: Kenneth Blanchard, Alexander Rose and Zachary Rose, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Rose; a granddaughter, Susan Rose; and her brothers: Frank, Andrew, and John Hines and her sisters: Marguerite O’Brien, Mary Colella and Catherine Barker.
