Patrick Hugo Guthrie peacefully departed this life on Saturday, July 14th, 2018. He was the 4th child born to Myrtle Pryce Guthrie and Glenville Guthrie on August 17th, 1952 in Kingston, Jamaica. In his early years Patrick attended Warsop Primary School and completed his adolescent years at Clarendon College in Chapelton, Jamaica. His summer months were spent with his Aunt Lorna in May Pen where he acquired a great love for animals. He would assist her in taking care of the pigs and ducks. His reward would be duck eggs, which he enjoyed and shared with his favorite cousins.
In 1977 Patrick married the love of his life, Leana Urica Guthrie (“Rica”) and in 1979, departed Jamaica to attend Ft. Valley State University (FVSU) in Fort Valley, GA. He would later attain a Bachelor’s Degree in Science, while working full time and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. His love for research grew at FVSU as he worked for many years in the Agricultural Research Department. His passion for Animals and Research would later lead him to pursue more knowledge at Tuskegee University and Prairie View University.
In 1991, Patrick started his career as a Senior Research Associate with University of Texas Medical Center, Cardiology Department under the leadership of Dr. Heinrich Taegtmeyer. Patrick loved his UT family and worked there for 27 years until his health failed him. Throughout his career and college days, Patrick published many research articles and poetry.
Patrick believed that “life was for the living” and although he believed in working hard, he enjoyed life much more. Patrick loved to dance, sing and eat.
He was always looking forward to the next cookout or party to enjoy with friends. Patrick was also a “jokester” and loved making everyone laugh. He had no greater enjoyment than making others happy. Sometimes even telling the same jokes over again but just as funny the second time. Patrick enjoyed cooking and baking from his own self-titled “Pata Pata” Pastries, where he baked Jamaican treats to mail to family.
Patrick will be greatly missed by his two daughters, Tanya S. Brown (Randy) and Virginia M. Guthrie-Villarreal (Daniel), Grandchildren, Randhi and Nicholas Brown, sisters, Hyacinth Daley (Gossett) and Marie Guthrie Williams, his cousins he considered siblings, Yohan, Sheila, John and Jefferson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 yrs., Leana “Rica” Guthrie, his son, Michael Patrick Guthrie, Mother, Myrtle Pryce Guthrie, Father, Glenville Guthrie and brothers, Emory and Fitzgerald Guthrie.
