Melvin Quentin Thorne, Jr. was born in Houston, Texas, February 23, 1939, and passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2013 in Katy, Texas. He is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Thorne and Ruby Bauerkemper Thorne, and daughter, Dana Thiem. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Peggy Thorne; daughter Lorrie Hartnett and husband Randy of Canyon Lake, Tx, step sons David Rudd and Danny Rudd of Odessa, Tx; grandchildren Joshua Thorne, Misty Jenkins and Justin Thiem of Houston, Tx, and Casey and Bailey Hartnett of Canyon Lake, Tx along with several great grandchildren; brother Rodney Thorne and his wife Ruth of Conroe, Tx and sister-in-law Becky Pyburn of Abilene, Tx; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
He is a graduate of Sam Houston High School in Houston and received a bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Tx. He completed his Master’s degree in social work at the University of Texas at Austin. His career spanned 40 years as an educator, psychotherapist, healthcare and mental health administrator and until retirement in 2003 co-founder and President of National Healthcare Alliance, in Houston. He served on several national, state and local boards of directors and committees including the National Healthcare Leadership Council. In 2005, he was awarded the HTUC Lifetime Leadership Award. He has been a cruise agent for Expedia Cruise Center for a number of years as well.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6:00pm until 8:00pm on Friday, October 11, 2013 at Katy Funeral Home, 23350 Kingsland Boulevard in Katy, Texas. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, October 12, 2013 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Kyle Nix officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery.
