Matthew John Farmen died unexpectedly at home in Katy, Texas on March 14, 2014.
Matt was born October 20, 1981 in Gillette, Wyoming. He attended school in Gillette, Katy, and Springfield, Illinois before returning to Katy in 1997. He graduated from Taylor High School in 2000. After graduation, Matt worked at Meadowbrook Farms Golf Club, Academy Sports, and Papa Johns.
Matt was an active member of Boy Scout Troop 13, sponsored by First United Methodist Church in Springfield, attaining Order of The Arrow and Life Rank. He especially enjoyed campouts and wilderness adventures. He was also active in the youth choir and youth ministries of First United Methodist. The family appreciates all of his scout masters and youth directors for helping Matt learn and grow as a person.
In Springfield, Matt developed a passion for ice hockey, playing several years with the Springfield Kings youth hockey organization. Later, he played in Katy with the Houston Junior Aeros youth hockey organization. He was a key player on the Katy Taylor ice hockey team formed in 1998, which qualified for the TAHA state tournament three successive years. The team finished as high as runner-up in 1998. The family would like to thank all of Matt’s coaches for mentoring him and developing his skills, and his teammates for their camaraderie and support.
Matt is deeply loved by his family. He is survived by his parents, Julee and Dale Farmen of Katy, sister Molly Farmen of Houston, brother Jacob of College Station and maternal grandmother, Lillie Ann Hybertson, now residing in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Matt was preceded in death by grandparents Paul Hybertson of Rapid City, South Dakota and Alpha and John Farmen of Veblen, South Dakota.
Matt is also survived by nine wonderful aunts and uncles and thirteen cousins from South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana, Colorado and California.
The family will be present to greet friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Friday, March 28 at Katy Funeral Home, 23350 Kingsland Blvd, Katy, TX 77494. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, March 29 at St. Peter’s United Methodist, 20775 Kingsland Blvd, Katy 77450.
