Gerry enlisted in the United States Army in 1960 and was accepted into Officer Candidacy School (OCS) in 1965 before going on to serve in the Vietnam War in 1969. After returning home, Gerry obtained a BA degree from Georgia State University and later his Masters from Webster University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Over the 20-year span of his military career, he and his family were stationed all over the world including Korea, Vietnam, and Germany. His commitment to duty, honor and loyalty were unwavering, and his exemplary service inspired all who knew him. With many honors and distinctions, he retired from the Army in 1980 to Missouri City, Texas after having earned the rank of U.S. Army Major. With the skills of discipline and leadership from the military, Gerry went on to work in personnel at Reliability Inc., & later became a Sales Leader in the United States Chamber of Commerce, where he was awarded Top Sales status many times over the years. Gerry was a devoted Patriot who was very proud to have served the country he loved. A man of God, he supported Veterans proudly. He was a member of St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Katy where he served as a member of the choir. He and Kristine met at St. Peter’s and enjoyed many happy years together, traveling and surrounding themselves with a large, loving family.
Gerry was born June 22, 1942, in Belleville, Illinois to Bill and Ruby Dorman. Ruby remarried and he, along with his sister Beth, were later adopted by Harold (Woody) Woods. At 33, Gerry was reunited with his father Bill and his wife Libby along with his three half-siblings: David, Steve, Sonja, William and stepbrother Mike.
Gerry is preceded in rest by His parents, Ruby and Harold (Woody) Woods, his father Bill and stepmother Libby Dorman, and half brother William Dorman.
Gerry is survived by his wife of 31 years, Kristine (Groothousen) Woods; his sister Beth Mayo (husband Jeff); two children: Gerry Woods, Jr (wife Sandy) and Kim Lloyd, five stepchildren: Michelle Sivadon (husband John), Amy Heritage (husband Kevin), Jennifer McCormick (husband Billy), Brian Erickson (wife Cheryl), and Danielle Harris (husband Chris). He was blessed to have a total of 21 grandchildren; Jessica, Jason, Ryan, Devon, Heather, Chase, Tyler, Ashley, Kyle, Shelby, Kellen, Kayla, Megan, Haley, Amrylin, Kyson, Declan, Paxton, Makayley, Kylynn, and Bradley along with seven great-grandchildren: Parker, Maci, Avery, Jace, Addison, Charlotte and Griffin. He is also survived by his most beloved dog Abby. His legacy will be cherished.
Gerry was a wonderful, loving kind, thoughtful and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was an avid golfer all his life and his happiest times were spent on the golf course with other members of the family and friends. He and Kristine were well-known and loved at Willow Fork Country Club. He loved and cherished his dog Abby who he referred to as “Kim’s sister.” His huge, boisterous laugh will be missed and his Dad jokes will carry on for years.
