On the morning of Friday, March 5, 2016 we lost our wonderful friend, father, grandfather, brother and son, Gary Grant of Houston, Texas. Gary was loved deeply by his family and friends who knew him as a hardworking, honest and loyal man. He was true a Texan, born in McKinney while also living in Wylie, Edinburg and Corpus Christi. His eagerness for work developed at an early age with a newspaper delivery route while later becoming a short order cook. He served in the United States Marine Corp in Yuma, Arizona as an aviation electronics technician. After his service he moved with his family back to Corpus Christi and then on to Cleveland and Norman Oklahoma, Parkersburg, West Virginia before finally settling in Houston in 1993.
It was in Corpus Christi, 1978, that Gary obtained a job with Go Wireline (Gearhart) which would later become Halliburton. This career took him all over the United States and even to Angola. Gary worked for 37 years at Halliburton which was an immense and meaningful part of his life. Here he would become known by his co-workers as the consummate employee and source of Logging knowledge. He began in the field and ended in the office but remained a man who would prefer to be in a truck with a thermos of coffee driving to a location.
Later in life, Gary was able to pursue his passion for road trips, crossing the country several times taking him from Memphis to San Francisco and as far as Alaska. He enjoyed making trips in record time but was ever in search of “the best chicken fried steak” which was sadly never found. For several years his furry co-pilot was his pet and third son, Clancy. Although the trips became more difficult without Clancy he continued them in 2014 in his Chevy SS, the ultimate combination of comfort and muscle. His final trip took him on the original Route 66 starting in Chicago in ending in Los Angeles where he told his family, in his best Forrest Gump, “I’m tired, think I’ll go home now”. Gary had a great sense of humor that will greatly be missed by his family. He was a man of learning with particular affection for science, specifically geology and space exploration. Gary travelled several times to Cape Canaveral to watch the Space Shuttle launch.
Gary is preceded in death by his wife, Mary and grandson, Dominik Grant of Houston, Father, Ed Grant and Brother, Alan Grant and step-father, Walter Hicks all of Corpus Christi. He is survived by mother, Dorthie Grant Hicks and brother, Ron Grant both of Corpus Christi, step-brother, Jim Hicks of Friendswood, sons; Marc and Michael Grant, Daughter in Laws, Jennifer and Brittany Grant, grandchildren; Maggie, Rachel, Amelia, James and Ozymandias all of Houston and his dear friend, “PJ” Paul Stapp of Port Lavaca.
