Fred was born on April 2, 1939 in Atlanta, Georgia. He grew up in Dallas, Texas and graduated from Jesuit High School. He then went on to attend East Texas State University on a track scholarship where he held two world records, one in the 100yd dash and one in the 220yd dash. He was an active member in Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He completed his Master’s Degrees in Education and Education Management from East Texas State and Prairie View A & M. He was inducted into the Jesuit Hall of Fame and the East Texas State University Hall of Fame. Fred retired from Spring Branch Independent School District in 2000 and went on to enjoy spending time with his family and friends.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; Harold and Agnes Schaefer. He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Karen Schaefer of Katy, TX; sons David Schaefer and wife Liza of Katy, TX; Bob Schaefer and wife Allison of Katy, TX; grandchildren Kayla Schaefer, Ryan Schaefer, Matthew Schaefer and Brian Schaefer; and a host of other family and friends.
The Schaefer family would like to give a special thanks to Rosie Perez, Yadira Vasquez and Season’s Hospice and staff who took such loving care of him in his final days of life.
A memorial service will be held February 16, 2019 at 11:00am in the chapel of Katy Funeral Home 23350 Kingsland Blvd. Katy, TX 77384. A reception will follow immediately after the service at the funeral home.
