As a young man, Fidel joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) where he was stationed in Uvalde, Texas and New Mexico. Thereafter, he proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945. As a member of the 41st Infantry Division, he received training in Australia and then saw combat in New Guinea and the Philippines. In May 1945 he was honorably discharged. After serving in the army he worked for the civil service at Laredo Air Force Base in Laredo, Texas and Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas until his retirement. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, woodworking, and helping family and friends with home projects.
Fidel is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Victoria Flores; his son Fidel Flores Jr. (Jane); and his daughters Yolanda Rahme (Amin), Elsa Valo (Thomas) and Norma Gonzalez (Santiago). Grandfather of Jeff Flores, Zeina Holwill (Mark), Joseph Rahme (Kathleen), Robert Valo, Stephen Valo, Christina Gonzalez and Daniel Gonzalez. Great-Grandfather of Maya Holwill and Gavin Holwill. He is also survived by his sister Alicia Villarreal and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Thursday, June 18, 2015 at the Katy Funeral Home with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 pm. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, June 19, 2015 at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church, in Katy, Texas. Rite of Committal will be at 1:30 pm at The Houston National Cemetery with Military Funeral Honors.
Fidel touched a lot of lives and will forever be remembered for his smile, wit, humor, and personable personality.
