Edward A. Hayes

Edward "Ed" Alvin Hayes, 81, of Katy, Texas, died Wednesday, August 30, 2017, in his home from complications related to advanced pulmonary fibrosis. In Hospice care prior to his death, Ed died peacefully, with Deanie, his wife, best friend and partner of 47 years, at his side.

Ed was born May 22, 1936, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up as the eldest of four children and attended Saint Aloysius High School, in New Orleans. Ed served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, in San Diego. He became a proficient rifle and pistol marksman during this time, as well as a Marine Corps Water Safety Instructor. Ed obtained his Bachelor degree in Animal Science from Southeastern Louisiana University, in Hammond. His interest in botany, insects and chemical manufacturing led him to work in the field of agribusiness. Ed went on to manage several cotton gins and pesticide manufacturing facilities in Louisiana, Washington, Southern California and Texas. He specialized in the design and completion of a formulating facility which pelletized the micronutrient, Borax.

While working in the agriculture industry, Ed honed his Spanish speaking skills, his love of teaching and conversing and went on the teach English as a Second Language (ESL) at Houston Community College. He later worked for many years in the cement and pipe industry in Houston, cultivating an understanding of the concrete and aggregate business.

Finally, in the last eleven years leading up to his ailing health, Ed did his best work. He was an active grandfather, who was always willing to chauffeur, give advice, life lessons and "hang" with Casey and Reese. "Ed, Eddie, Mr. Ed and Papa" was well known in the daycare and elementary offices, school yard, carpool lines and pediatrician offices; the various coaches and parents of the swim, gymnastics and soccer teams and of course, numerous staff at CHI Baylor St. Luke's Hospital, in the Texas Medical Center, Methodist West and St. Catherine's, in Katy.

Being a native of New Orleans, Ed cherished the culinary cuisine, culture, history and music of his beloved city. He was a pilot in this younger years and enjoyed flying crop dusters, as well as his own personal Cessna. Ed enjoyed photography, ruminating about spirituality, religion, genealogy and of course, a good road trip.

Ed was preceded in death by his son, Marty Paul Lemoine (age 51), in 2014 and son-in-law, Sterling Charles Rhemann (age 44), also in 2014.

Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife, Deanie; daughter, Angelle Rhemann and partner, Eric Sharma; granddaughters, Jessica, Jennifer, Jasmin, Casey and Reese; and grandson, Logan.

A Memorial Service will be celebrated in the Chapel of Katy Funeral Home, on Sunday, September 24, 2017, at two o'clock in the afternoon. A reception will follow the service in the Event Room.
