Dennis was born in Bronxville, New York. After serving time in the Army in Vietnam, he returned to New York in time to join the Woodstock crowd. Soon after, he began his career in chemical research with Texaco. He was transferred to Shell Oil in Houston and retired after 42 years of service. While working at Shell, he met his future wife, Sherry. Dennis and Sherry began their life together in 2006.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry Rao, his son Dennis Joseph Rao Jr., his daughter, Antoinette Mary Roycroft and her husband D.C. Roycroft. He is also survived by many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as Sherry's children, grandchidren and great grandchilden who he lovingly added to his family. Dennis was proceeded in death by his parents, Lewis Rao, Antoinette Consorte Rao, and his older brother Steve Rao.
He was a loving father and grandfather who loved large family gatherings. He quickly adopted the Texas Bar-b-que tradition and loved showing off his new skill at family pool parties. He was always happiest when the house was filled with family. Other times, he spent time in his Man Cave working on his model trains
Dennis and Sherry made many fall trips to New York to visit family and friends, stopping on the way to explore museums and visit such places as Gettsyburg. Their final destination was the beautiful coast of Maine where they explored all the lobster shacks and light houses. Their first trip together was to Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and every trip was a renewal of their love. He was a Renaissance Man with many interests who loved to laugh and enjoy life, but most of all he was a loving man who always put his family first. He will be dearly missed.
